Avery

Avery,
So a few things I think that you can work on in practice that will help you over the next month or so are:

  • Keep working on your serve. It was coming along before high school tryouts and I am sure that getting reps in practice is helping. Just remember to keep your elbow high and wait as long as possible to swing so your arm is moving as fast as possible at contact. Your footwork looked good but make sure you are getting your hip out in front of your shoulder and keep the toss over just in front of your hitting shoulder

  • Work on your blocking. As a right side one of your biggest responsibilities is to protect your setter down the line and set a good block so the middle can close to you. Strong, locked out shoulders, and hand positioning is essential. So is sealing the net - which is keeping as little gap as possible between the bottom of your arms and the net so the ball can’t slip through.

  • Keep working on your approach. You had the tendency to stand up a little too straight when we were working together so make sure you are loose and getting a good gather and backswing as you are getting ready to jump and make your bow and arrow. Staying loose will help you a ton. Also, always keep checking on your footwork from time to time. Lastly, keep your contact point as high as possible - that will help you with power and getting over/around the block.

  • Passing and Defense. Work on your ball control and just get touches. You can literally sit in your room for 10-15 minutes every day or every other day and just work on controlling the ball with one or two hands. Simple things like that train your nervous system and muscles to make tiny little changes to help put the ball where you want it to go. As far as game time passing and defense - remember to start with your feet about shoulder width. Too wide of a base will keep you from getting a good first step jump on the ball. Stay loose with your platform until the ball is about ready to make contact with your platform.

I made a Youtube channel with some videos for you that I think can help you and give you a visual idea of some of the things I have mentioned. If you want more just let me know and I will get them up. I am sorry this took so long - I meant to have it down a couple weeks ago but things have just been hectic. I promise, promise, promise, that if you need anything else I will be way faster in getting it to you!
